Revamping at the Smurfit Kappa Ania Paper

SADAS won another challenge performing the Revamping of the Machine 3 dryer section at the Smurfit Kappa Ania Paper. This was a very complex operation not only because of the technical difficulties, but especially because of the limited timeframe for the intervention.
In details, we have expanded the existing DCS, integrating the machine sectional control to it. The DC drive technology on the wet part of the machine has been kept for various reasons, while the old analog starters have been changed with new digital ones. The new components have been inserted directly into the old control panels, in order to use the existing plant to connect the starters to the recovered DC engines, a great solution in terms of saving cost and intervention time. A new electrical Multidrivein AC panel has been specifically made for the starters of the dry part of the machine.
We also added a new Safety processor dedicated exclusively to the drives management. Through digital communication the DCS can now manage the reference speed for the various machine sections, and implement the necessary control over the pairs and the pull of paper. All information, data process, historical trends, machine alarms and interlocks are made accessible through the operator stations located at strategic points of the plant. The use of a new Safety processor allowed us to centralize all security functions within the DCS with a considerable benefit in terms of diagnostics and costs savings.
